Now the Babysitter In Chief needs a babysitter. White House Chief of Staff John Kelly may have been right in his claim that had there been no failure to compromise, the Civil War might have been avoided. Set aside the minor detail about all the compromises that proceeded secession. If compromise had prevented the war we’d still have slavery in parts of the country unless a later civil war finally ended it because of failure to compromise.
Compromise is an essential social mechanism for settling conflicts. Conflicting worldviews are as human as eating apple pie. But eat enough of it, the body bloats beyond functionality. But there are zones where compromise compromises any claim to integrity and decency. For exaample: a respected presidential chief of staff who compromises his integrity in defense of his boss – makes a false statement but refuses to acknowledge his error despite documented evidence of his untruth. Then suggests falsely that the Civil War was caused by a failure to allow slavery to exist in the Land of the Free where all are created equal.
We all might be underestimating the toxicity of Donald Trump. There my be something he exhales that causes everyone in the White House to corrode. Kelly has become the embodiment of compromise in the face of pathologically unfit leadership. He’s now one more member ot the White House in need of babysitting.
